Heirloom mangelwurzel is a fun, mammoth root vegetable which was mainly used as fodder, but gaining popularity for its beetroot like roots and leaves. A little less earthy than beetroot, they are sweeter and look like chioggia beets when sliced.


Harvested young, the sweet root can be used as you would beetroot or add to soups and stews. If you are up for some fun grow one or two to reach maturity. They can grow to the size of a 4 year old and make fascinating discussions with children and adults alike. The craze has taken the UK and USA by storm amongst growers. I am going to give it my best shot! Who is game?


Sowing: direct sow seeds 1-2cm deep in soil with a temperatures ranging from 10-30C. Each seed is a cluster and will produce 3-5 plants.

Growing: Hardy biennial. Grow in full sun and keep well watered.
