Pineapple Physallis (Pineapple Cape gooseberry)

Cape gooseberries, but with a pineapple twist. Oval fruits in papery husks which are ready to eat while the husks are still green, sweeter than cape gooseberries and getting even sweeter when fully ripe.

If they are not all eaten straight in the garden, they make the most delectable jam which pairs beautifully with cheeses. Always a star on a cheeseboard. Gooseberries are high in pectin, a little less sugar needed than regular jams, a squeeze of lemon and quick boiling as it sets really quickly. I love to add some ginger too. Delicious spooned onto a dark chocolate torte and a special topping for cheesecakes too!

Growing: Sow seeds in early spring. A heat mat will aid germination or place in a warm area. The plants don't mind the cooler weather and in Cape Town they crop continuously all year round.

Quantity: 30 seeds
